Health Promoter – Diabetes NZ, based in Auckland.

About the role | Mō te tūnga

Join us at Diabetes NZ – the only national organisation for diabetes in Aotearoa, New Zealand.  This is a full time role, based in Auckland that is part of an established community-based health promotion and prevention service that provides accessible diabetes screening services to communities in and around Auckland. 

You will play a vital role in delivering high quality diabetes screening, education and awareness. We are looking for an enthusiastic health promoter to be part of preventative pro-active diabetes activities. 

This service strives to make a difference in people understanding the risk factors, importance of screening, and creates opportunity for access to much needed community-based testing.  If you are passionate about working with people, enjoy a variety of work settings, and the chance to make a real difference in people’s lives - this is the job for you.

You will work in collaboration with a registered nurse, and an experienced health promoter in community-based outreach settings.  Your responsibilities will include conducting diabetes risk assessments and screenings using our mobile equipment, collecting and analysing blood glucose samples (training provided), health information and education tailored to individual results, maintaining accurate records and databases, promotion of diabetes awareness and education in local communities and coordination of out-reach schedule.   

What you will bring | Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu

Relevant healthcare experience and/or qualifications.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – adapted to meet health literacy need including English as a second language. Demonstrated respect and understanding for diversity of cultural backgrounds, and particularly those with the highest prevalence rates for developing Type 2 diabetes in Aotearoa (Māori, Pasifika and South Asian).

Ability to work independently, and as part of a team and a great sense of humour is essential to thriving in this organisation.

Flexibility to adapt your hours of work to meet the needs of community events (weekend work and evenings at times).

Commitment to working in a mobile environment and travelling to a variety of locations. A full (clean) NZ driver’s license is required. You will have the ability to drive a large manual vehicle with confidence and proficiency in and around Auckland.

Youth and Type 1 Coordinator – Diabetes NZ, Tauranga

About the role | Mō te tūnga

This position is for 15 hours per week working from home.

Fundraising and event planning are integral to the success of this role so experience in these areas would be advantageous but isn't essential.

Key tasks and areas of responsibility will include:

  •  Planning, marketing and implementing the logistics of youth activities, events and camps, ensuring Health and Safety obligations are met and Risk Assessment planning occurs for each event.

  • Recruitment, co-ordination and management of all the personnel related to activities and camps to ensure service delivery and events run smoothly.

  • Ability to provide support for parents and their families/whānau affected by diabetes: at all times demonstrating empathy and empowerment.

  • Liaise with key stakeholders in secondary and primary care to support best practice for youth with diabetes and families/whānau.

  • Ensure the Diabetes NZ Tauranga Youth Facebook page has relevant content and up to date information to meet the needs of tamariki and rangatahi with diabetes and their families/whānau.

  •  Attend and contribute to Diabetes NZ Youth team meetings. 

What you will bring | Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu

  • Personal experience of what it means to live with type 1 diabetes.

  • Tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in related fields would be desirable.

  • Excellent understanding and knowledge of issues impacting young people with diabetes.

  • Strong organisational, administration and operational support skills.

  • A demonstrated interest and enthusiasm for what Diabetes NZ and Tauranga Youth represents.

  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to the needs and requirements of parents, families/whānau and young people with Type 1 diabetes and manage enquiries to their satisfaction.
